The Layoff Email

The email sent to the affected employees reflects the difficult decision made by Google due to changes in business needs. The company expresses regret for the impact on employees and outlines the restructuring schedule, set to commence on January 10, 2024.

Severance and Reapplication Opportunities

Notably, Google is providing severance pay to eligible employees, along with the opportunity to reapply for select positions available in other departments. The email emphasizes that re-securing a position is not guaranteed, and if employees fail to do so by April 9, 2024, their last day at Google will be the Termination Date.

Termination Details and Benefits

The termination details include a minimum of 90 days’ pay and related benefits from the notification date until the Termination Date. Company benefits, including the accrual of vacation, will continue during this period. The Severance Pay Plan offers a package starting at 14 weeks’ salary plus an additional week for every year of service, subject to applicable withholdings and deductions.

Offboarding Process

Employees are directed to the Offboarding Site, which provides essential tasks to complete during the Notification Period, details about outplacement services, state unemployment information, and information about requesting further HR support. The notification period may also involve transitioning role-related duties and consulting with peers and managers.

Conditions and Discretion

The blog post will highlight conditions set by Google, such as the requirement to sign and return the Separation Agreement and Release for eligibility for the severance package. Google retains the discretion to withhold the severance package in cases of misconduct or pending investigations for sexual misconduct or retaliation.

State-Specific Information

For New York State employees, the blog post will cover the eligibility for job retraining, re-employment services, and other assistance, as well as access to unemployment insurance benefits. Washington State employees on Washington Paid Family and Medical Leave will receive information about the end of health care plan coverage on the Termination Date.

Permanency and Notice Obligations

The blog post will discuss Google’s acknowledgment of the permanency of the layoffs and the company’s stance on bumping rights. It will also touch upon any notice obligations under federal and/or state Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Acts.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the blog post will summarize the key takeaways, emphasizing the importance of understanding the support systems in place, the termination process, and the avenues available for affected employees to explore during this challenging time.
